Austin Randel enters his second full season in 2020-21 as an assistant coach on the Saints' staff. Before returning to Aquinas, Randel coached two years as an assistant coach at Calvin, which followed two seasons of serving as a Volunteer of Assistant Player Development with the AQ men's basketball team from 2015 to 2017.
Randel served as the interim head coach of Calvin's women's basketball program, where he led the Knights to a MIAA tournament berth. As interim head coach, he reviewed game film and statistical reports for game operations, coordinated team travel and daily operations of the program, implemented in-game strategy and recruited prospective student-athletes.
Before his role as head coach, Randel served as an assistant coach at Calvin where he created drills, scheduled meetings and practices to improve player fitness and preparation, coordinated clinics and summer camps, reviewed game film and assisted in the development of multiple all-conference and regional players.
Prior to coaching at Calvin, he worked as the Michigan Basketball Academy AAU head coach for both the men's and women's teams. He coached the women's MBA 15U/17U National Team, as well as the women's MBA 14U/15U Regional Team and the men's MBA 15U Regional Team.
Randel played basketball professionally for the Grand Rapids Cyclones of the PBL as well as collegiately at Ferris State University in Big Rapids and North Greenville University in Greenville, South Carolina. He also had a stellar prep career at McBain High School.
