The men's soccer team came back from a 3-1 deficit to earn a draw in WHAC play on the road against UM-Dearborn. The Saints earned an important point in the conference standings and improve to 1-3-2 in WHAC play and 2-6-5 overall.
After a scoreless first-half, it was the visiting Saints that opened the games' scoring, with
Franco Calabrese finding the back of the net in the 56th minute to make it 1-0 in favor of AQ. The goal was Calabrese's third of the season for the Saints. The lead would be short-lived, however, as the Wolverines countered less than four minutes later to tie things up 1-1.
From there the host Wolverines would take control of the match, scoring goals in the 64th and 75th minutes to take what looked like an insurmountable 3-1 lead over the Saints. But Aquinas battled back, and started the comeback train with a goal in the 86th minute from
Jake Ireland to cut the lead to 3-2. It was the first of the season for Ireland, and his first goal in an Aquinas uniform. Ireland was assisted by
Jackson Moore on the play. Just 90 seconds later, the Saints would stun the Wolverines and their fans and find the equalizer. This time it was
Zachary Senko, the freshman from Clarkston, who put the Saints on the board. Playing in just his third match of the season, the rookie Senko gave the Saints new life and momentum, completing the comback.
Franco Calabrese had the assist on the play.
After what seemed like a sure win for the Wolverines evaporated, the two teams headed to extra-time to try to determine a winner. After two extra-periods and 20 extra minutes, neither team could find the winner, and the teams ended in a double-overtime draw. The two teams combined for 43 fouls on the night, with the Wolverines outshooting AQ 19-15. Saints' goalkeeper
Antonio Strassioto made five saves in net.
The Saints will return home for another conference clash this Saturday, as they host Concordia on the AQ Athletic Field at 12:00 pm.
