AQ Scores Six Times in Shutout of Concordia

Saints score most goals in a game since the 2015 season

The Aquinas men's soccer team notched its highest-scoring game in four seasons on Saturday (Oct. 19), as the Saints posted a 6-0 shutout at the AQ Athletic Field over visiting Concordia. Five different AQ players found the back of the net on Saturday, including four goals in the opening 45 minutes to put the game away early for the Saints.

With the win, AQ improves to 3-6-5 on the year and 2-3-2 in conference play. Concordia drops to 3-11 overall, while the Cardinals drop to 1-6 in league action.

The six tallies on Saturday are the most by Aquinas since Oct. 28, 2015, when the Saints recorded a 7-0 victory; that contest was also against Concordia, but a road game late in the 2015 season.

AQ got going early with a pair of goals in the first 23 minutes. Fin Pittock started the scoring, using a pair of nice feeds from Jackson Moore and Zachary Senko to give the Saints the 1-0 lead at the 10:11 mark. Barely a dozen minutes later, Damir Sabanovic took a cross from Pittock and deposited it in the back of the net for the 2-0 advantage. It was Sabanovic's first goal in a Saints uniform, but not the last of the day for the freshman.

The score remained 2-0 until late in the half, when Moore made it a three-goal lead with a goal at 41:07, scoring off a pass from Jake Ireland. Less than two minutes after Moore's goal, Sabanovic notched his second goal of the game and the season, with Pittock finding the rookie for the tally that put AQ in front 4-0 at the intermission.

Statistically, Concordia dominated much of the second half, but Aquinas added two more goals to the scoreboard over the final 45 minutes. Jai Tahlan delivered a goal at the 59:04 mark, with the assist going to Giuseppe Calabrese. In the 79th minute, Moore was again involved, recording the assist on a goal from Luke Larson to cap the scoring and the 6-0 victory. It was Larson's first tally of the season.

The final stats certainly did not tell the story of the game, as Concordia held a 19-17 lead in total shots – though 16 of those shots came in the second stanza. CUAA also held a wide 10-1 margin in corner kicks. Fouls were pretty even, with AQ committing 14 fouls to the Cardinals' 12.

Pittock and Moore each delivered two assists, with Pittock now owning a team-high five helpers. Moore – who scored his first goal of the year – ranks third on the team with three assists. It was the second goal each for Tahlan and Pittock.

Sabanovic posted a game-high five shots, while Alberto Teatin collected three shots.

Antonio Strassioto stopped all nine shots he faced to collect his fourth shutout for the Saints.

AQ heads on the road for its next two contests. The Saints will face Rochester on Wednesday (Oct. 23) and Madonna next Saturday (Oct. 26).
