The women's soccer team was victorious tonight in resounding fashion, topping their guests from UM-Dearborn by a final of 7-0. The win improves the Saints' record to 5-1 in WHAC play and 10-2-1 overall.
The Saints were dominant from the start, keeping possession for a majority of the first half. It took a while for the Saints to get on the scoreboard despite the numerous chances, but they did break the 0-0 deadlock in the 20th minute with a goal by
Filippa Struxsjo. The junior forward continued her hot scoring streak, adding a goal after scoring three in the last match. She now has nine goals on the season, good for second on the team. Struxsjo was assisted by
Jenna Konwerski, who delivered a great pass from the right wing and was a problem for the Wolverines all night pressing forward into the attack.
Aquinas once again looked to attack down the right side of the field on their second goal, this time with
Danni McKenzie delivering a ball into the box to
Hannah Crum. Crum found an open
Madison Mohr, who found the back of the net for a 2-0 lead. Less than two minutes later, Crum would get herself on the scoreboard as she blasted a rocket past the Wolverine keeper from the left to make it 3-0. The Saints would not be finished scoring in the first-half, adding a goal via a Wolverine own-goal in the 41st minute, and Mohr's second goal of the night in the 45th minute. Mohr found a loose ball that had bounced around in the box and put it home for her third goal of the season.
The Saints added two more in the second-half, the first on blast from outside the box by freshman defender
Jayne Vredevoogd. It was the first goal of the AQ career for the Grandville product, and was assisted by fellow freshman
Millie Templeman. Crum put the finishing touches on the match in the 71st minute, taking a pass from
Jenna Smith and heading to the middle of the field, where she rocketed a shot past a diving Wolverine keeper and just inside the right post for her 10th goal of the season.
Braeleigh McCoy and
Taryn Webb combined for the shutout for the Saints, their 8th of the season. McCoy made one save in her 45 minutes of action. The Saints outshot the Wolverines 33-6 on the day and had six corners to the Wolverines' one.
Aquinas is back in action on Saturday when they host Concordia at 3:00 pm.
