The men's soccer team traveled to Livonia to take on #24 Madonna in WHAC action this afternoon. They will come back to Grand Rapids with a 1-1 draw and a key point in WHAC play. The Saints are now 4-6-6 on the season and 3-3-3 in conference play.
The game featured a lot of action, with a combined 36 fouls, 19 corner-kicks and 24 shots, but only a handful of true scoring opportunities. The Saints and Crusaders combined for just seven shots on goal in 110 minutes of action. Saints goalkeeper
Antonio Strassioto made three saves on the day, with Madonna's Joe Smith making two.
The Saints broke the ice on the game, scoring first with a
Jai Tahlan goal in the 39th minute. The goal was Tahlan's third of the season. After earning a free-kick, the Saints'
Alberto Teatin put a ball into the box that found Teatin, who put it in past the Madonna goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead. The Saints would hold the lead into halftime, but Madonna would equalize just three minutes into the second-half. Neither team was able to find the winner over the final 42 minutes of action, and the game heading into extra-time. A pair of 10 minute overtime periods could not seperate the two teams either, and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
The Saints became just the second WHAC team this season to take points from the Crusaders, who are 2nd in the WHAC with a 7-1-1 record in conference play now. Aquinas has moved into a tie for fourth place at the time of writing with a 3-3-3 WHAC record and 12 conference points.
Aquinas will return to action on Wednesday when they host Siena Heights at 7:00 pm at the AQ Athletic Field.
