The women's soccer team won tonights re-scheduled soccer match against Cornerstone 2-1, improving to 7-1-1 on the season and 2-0 in WHAC play. The Saints have now won four straight matches and are unbeaten in their past seven contests.
The match, which was initially scheduled for Wednesday night at Cornerstone, was canceled, re-scheduled, and then eventually moved to be played on Aquinas' home field this evening. That gave the Saints the odd distinction of being designated as the "visiting" team despite playing on their home turf.
The Saints put aside all of the distractions and took control of the game early, scoring less than six minutes into the action to take a 1-0 lead.
Raegan Radaz netted her second goal of the season after taking a pass from
Danni McKenzie and putting it home behind the keeper. It looked as though the Saints would hold the lead heading into the halftime break, but the Golden Eagles rebounded at the 35' minute mark and equalized with an Anna Morgan goal to make it 1-1.
In the second-half the Saints' took control, outshooting the Golden Eagles 8-1 over the final 45 minutes. With the game flow starting to tilt to one side, the Saints were finally able to breakthrough and find the go-ahead (and eventual game-winning) goal in the 82nd minute.
Filippa Struxsjo won the ball outside the 18 and made a move before beating the Cornerstone keeper for a 2-1 lead. The goal was Stuxsjo's fifth of the season and put the Saints ahead for good.
Defensively, the Saints limited the Golden Eagles to just seven total shots and four on goal, three of which were turned away by goalkeeper
Braeleigh McCoy. McCoy, the reigning WHAC Defensive Player of the Week, earned her seventh victory of the season and now sports an impressive 0.86 GAA this season.
Aquinas will host University of Northwestern Ohio this Saturday at 12:00 pm.
