Saints Stopped By Blue Devils

The men's soccer team fell to Lawrence Tech this afternoon 2-0. The loss drops the Saints record to 1-2-1 in WHAC play and 2-5-4 overall.

The Blue Devils were victorious in a very disjointed game that saw a combined 12 offside calls, 16 fouls and nine yellow cards. Unfortunately for the Saints, 12 of those fouls and eight of the yellow cards were given to the Saints. The Saints and Blue Devils played a very even opening 45 minutes, despite the Saints facing an 8-0 disadvantage in fouls. Both teams had a hard time creating offensive chances in the first-half, with midfield play dominating the action and both goalkeepers stepping up to make multiple saves.

The second-half was a different story, as Lawrence Tech earned an 18-4 advantage in shots in the final 45 minutes of play, taking control of the action midway through the half. After earning a corner-kick in the 63rd minute, the Blue Devils scored off a header from Kevin Wright directly off the corner-kick. They followed that up moments later, doubling their lead after converting a penalty-kick after Saints' goalkeeper Antonio Strassioto was whistled for a yellow card on a bang-bang play in the box.

Aquinas was unable to pressure the Blue Devil backline much after that and were unable to mount the comeback, falling 2-0. Strassioto, the reigning NAIA National Defensive Player of the Week, made six saves in net for the Saints, who will travel to Ohio this Saturday to take on Lourdes at 7:00 pm.
