The Aquinas women's volleyball team won its fourth consecutive match on Saturday (Nov. 2), as the Saints overcame a tough first set against Lourdes to notch the final three sets in Sylvania, Ohio. After falling 25-11 in the opener, AQ roared back to finish off the Gray Wolves 25-15, 25-15, and 25-23.
With the victory, Aquinas moves to 12-6 in WHAC play and into a tie with UNOH for third place in the league standings. The Saints are now 15-12 overall on the year. Lourdes dips to 11-15 overall and 8-10 in conference play.
Despite Lourdes playing a terrific first set, AQ held the lead in several statistical categories, including a 48-38 advantage in kills and a .214 to .162 margin in hitting percentage. The Saints were also on top in assists (42-34) and digs (75-73), while Lourdes held slight edges in aces (9-7) and blocks (5-3).
Payton Klein posted a match-best 16 kills against just one error, hitting .395 in the win. She added six digs and a pair of block assists.
Jackie Rozell supplied 13 kills and
Kylie Christensen tallied 10 kills in 21 swings for a .381 attack clip, while serving a pair of aces.
Kali Crawford recorded another double-double of 40 assists and 12 digs.
Karly Morris picked up a match-best 25 digs and served three aces for AQ, while
Adrien Yondo added a dozen digs.
Maddie Ingraham notched six kills,
Emily Jones contributed three kills and three block assists, and
Tyler Bieszczad added six digs.
Lourdes ran away with set one, but the Saints responded with two large wins in sets two and three. AQ turned a close 10-7 score in set two into a 23-11 advantage with a big 13-4 run to even the match at one set apiece. Five straight points in set three gave Aquinas an 11-7 advantage it would not relinquish, eventually cruising to the 25-15 win.
AQ scored the first four points in the fourth set, but Lourdes rallied to take a 13-12 edge. It was 19-16 in the Gray Wolves' favor, but Aquinas scored seven straight points on Crawford's serving and two kills apiece from Rozell and Jones. It was 23-19 at the end of the 7-0 run on a Crawford service ace. Lourdes closed the deficit to 24-23, but committed an error to end the match.
The Saints stay on the road for a 7:00 p.m. match at UM-Dearborn on Wednesday (Nov. 6). AQ swept the Wolverines on Oct. 2 in the Sturrus Center.
