The men's hockey team claimed its fifth-straight win with a 9-2 victory over Concordia on the road. The win improves the Saints' record to 7-8 on the year and 3-6 in WHAC play.
The Saints led 2-1 after the first 20 minutes of action after scoring a pair of goals in the last four minutes of the period and giving up a late goal to the Cardinals.
Ryan Wolfe netted the opening goal off a feed from
Russell Shengulette, while
Brandon Rozema scored the second goal unassisted.
Aquinas blew the game open in the second-period, scoring all three goals in the stanza to take a 5-1 lead. Fresh off hat-tricks in their last game, both
Steven Gustafson and
Darren Johnson found the back of the net, as did
Trent Kulczyk. The junior from Schoolcraft assisted on Gustafson's goal.
Kyle Truax,
Nick Long and
Mason Stewart had helpers on the other Saints goals in the period.
The Saints scored a fourth-straight goal when Nick Stocket lit the lamp off of feeds from
Ryan Wolfe and
Brandon Schwandt. Aquinas would give one back a minute later, trimming their lead to 6-2. After being plagued by shorthanded goals given up for much of the season so far, the Saints countered the Concordia goal with a trifecta of shorties of their own this time, all in two-minute span. The first came off the stick of
Nick Long, with assists by Rozema and
Max Berry.
Steven Nisbet had the second, with Gustafson and
Alex Klekotka assisting. Berry then added a shorthanded goal of his own to cap the scoring, with Truax adding his second assist of the game.
Aquinas outshot the Cardinals 66-20 on the night. Goaltender
Nick Ottenbacher made 18 saves in net to earn the win for AQ. The Saints and Cardinals meet again tomorrow, this time at Southside Ice Arena at 7:30 pm.
