The men's hockey team won its sixth-straight game last night, topping Concordia 7-0 at Southside Ice Arena behind big games from
Russell Shengulette and
Brandon Rozema. The Saints are now 8-8 on the season and 4-6 in WHAC play.Â
The visiting Cardinals showed a spark early, taking the action to the Saints for the first few minutes of the game before Aquinas gained control of possession and began peppering Cardinal goaltender Trevor Waechter with shots from all over the ice. However, Waechter stood tall, as he would do all night, keeping the Cardinals in it early. It took until just over a minute left in the first period for the Saints to solve the Concordia goalie, with the opening goal coming from
Brandon Rozema.
Nick Stockert and
Russell Shengulette assisted on Rozema's 11th goal of the season, giving the Saints a 1-0 lead heading into intermission.
The floodgates would open for the Saints in the second-period, as they scored four times to break the game open.
Ryan Wolfe started off the scoring barrage with a nifty odd angled shot to beat Waechter just over two minutes into the period. It would then become the Shengulette show for the next four minutes, with the sophomore from Apex, North Carolina scoring back-to-back goals to extend the lead to 4-0. Shenugelette first took a lead pass from
Alex Klekotka and ended up one v. one with the Cardinal goalie, beating him for a 3-0 advantage. He followed that up with a power-play goal just minutes later for his fifth goal of the year and the four goal lead.
Darren Johnson and
Kyle Truax had assists on the play.
Nick Stockert rounded out the scoring in the second, tipping home a shot from
Mason Stewart for a 5-0 lead.Â
The Saints tacked on two more in the third, with Rozema, Stockert and Shengulette doing the heavy lifting. Rozema scored both goals to give himself a hat-trick on the night, the final goal coming with just 16 seconds to play. Stockert and Shengulette both had assists on each goal, giving Stockert a four-point night and Shengulette a team-leading five point evening.
Roman Malkov earned the win in net for the Saints, stopping all 19 shots he faced for his first shutout of the season.
Aquinas will hit the ice again next weekend with a pair of games at Southside against Eastern Michigan for Parents Weekend.Â
