Saints Ground Pilots 3-0 Behind Struxsjo's Two Goals

The women's soccer team got back on track this afternoon, winning their home opener 3-0 against the Bethel (Ind.) Pilots. The win improves the Saints' record to 2-1 on the season and is the third straight game to finish with a 3-0 score with the Saints in action.

The Saints dominated possession all afternoon, limiting the Pilots to just one shot and one shot on goal for the game. The Saints finished the game with 29 total shots, with 14 making it to goal. Aquinas opened the scoring in 19th minute after numerous early chances, with Filippa Struxsjo netting her first goal as a Saint. Defender Emma Gray won possession on the Saints' half and delivered a pass to Jenna Smith in the midfield, who found Struxsjo up top on the way to goal. After a smooth first touch, the junior transfer found the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. The Saints held on to a 1-0 lead after outshooting the Pilots 16-0 in the first 45 minutes.

Early in the second-half, the Saints doubled their lead, with Stuxsjo again finding the back of the net. This time it was Smith starting the play, as she found a streaking Raegan Radaz down the right side. Radaz delivered a cross from right to left to Struxsjo, who calmly collected and beat the goalkeeper to the far post. Smith nearly found herself on the scoresheet a few moments later when her her header struck the woodwork and stayed out. The Saints would get their third goal of the day in the 83rd minute, when Abby Frankhouse took a pass from freshman Millie Templeman and buried it to the near post for her fourth career goal and first of the season.

Goalkeeper Braeleigh McCoy earned the win and shutout in net for the Saints, her first career shutout. McCoy made a save on the only shot she faced this afternoon. The Saints defense, led by Grace Avery and Emma Gray, held tough on the backline and allowed the Pilots no room to operate.

The Saints return to action next Friday, September 6th, when they host Huntingon University at 7:00 pm.
