Women's Soccer Explodes For Six Goals in Win

The women's soccer team got back to its winning ways this evening, posting a 6-1 victory over visiting St. Xavier University to improve to 4-1-1 on the season. Six different Saints scored on the night.

Despite dominating possession of the ball early and creating some strong offensive chances, the Saints actually trailed after 13 minutes of play. After a tough foul called in the box against the Saints defense, Cougars' forward Shelby Bishop converted from the penalty spot to give the visitors the lead. The Saints were unable to convert a couple of chances immediately following the Cougar goal, but found the equalizer 11 minutes later. Katelyn Kahael found a wide open Hannah Crum on the left side, and Crum took one touch to the middle where she finished with the right foot to make it 1-1. After 45 minutes of play, the teams remained tied despite the Saints holding a 12-2 shots advantage in the first-half.

The Saints blew things open early in the second-half, scoring three goals in a seven minute span. The first, and the eventual game-winner, was by Danni Mckenzie from the penalty spot to make it 2-1. It was the first career AQ goal for Mckenzie. Madison Mohr scored her first goal of the season to follow Mckenzie and make it 3-1. Jenna Smith took a free-kick from deep outside the box for the Saints, and it was re-directed to Mohr by Lauryn Deshane. Mohr headed home Deshane's pass and the Saints had a two goal advantage. The final goal in the scoring barrage was by Filippa Struxsjo after she corralled a loose ball after a Saints' corner-kick. It was the third goal of the season for Struxsjo.

The Saints added two more goals late to stretch the final margin to five goals. Jenna Smith delivered a blast from well outside the box to make it 5-1. Jenna Konwerski assisted on the play. Saga Rydback closed the scorebook for the night with a rocket of her own coming down the right side of the pitch. Hannah Bowling was credited with the assist on the play. It was the first goal on the season for both Smith and Rydback, and the first of Rydback, a sophomore from Sweden's career.

Defensively, the Saints limited to Cougars to just seven shots on the day and five on goal. Braeleigh McCoy earned the win in net making one save and allowing the penalty-kick goal. Freshman Taryn Webb came on in relief of McCoy and made three saves in just under 20 minutes of action.

The Saints are now off until next Saturday when they host Olivet on Homecoming Saturday. Game time is set for 12:00 pm at the AQ Athletic Field.
