The men's soccer team traveled down the road to take on Calvin University tonight, falling short in OT by a final of 3-2. The Saints are now 1-3-2 on the season.
The Saints gave the Knights, the #11 ranked team in the latest NCAA DIII Soccer Top-25 Poll and last year's DIII National Runners-Up, all they could handle before dropping the match in the first extra time period. Aquinas struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute on a goal by
Franco Calabrese, his first of the year.
Fin Pittock assisted on the goal by the senior captain Calabrese, his second helper of the year. The Saints doubled their lead to 2-0 at the 61' minute mark, this time with Calabrese assisting on a goal by Bailley Whalley. The goal was Whalley's team leading fifth of the season in six games.
The Knights cut the lead in half just over two minutes later, and the Saints had to work to defend their lead. Unfortunately for the visitors, the Knights found the equalizer in the 85th minute, sending the match to extra-time. Calvin wouldn't wait long to find the game-winner, getting a goal by Drew Van Andel at the 7:21 mark in the first OT period to earn the victory.
Saints goalkeeper
Antonio Strassioto was once again strong leading the Saints' defense, making eight saves on the night. As a team the Saints had nine. The Saints were outshot by the Knights 26-14 on the night, but held the lead for over eighty minutes of game time over one of the top teams in NCAA DIII thanks to timely offense and Strassioto's play in net.
Aquinas is back on the field this Saturday during Homecoming Saturday as they host Mt. Vernon Nazarene. Game time is set for 3:00 pm.
