Saints Draw Against Mount Vernon Nazarene on Homecoming

Results

The AQ men's soccer team played on Saturday at homecoming against Mount Vernon Nazarene and earned a 1-1 draw after double overtime. The team moves to 1-3-3 on the season after this result against a team that in their previous match defeated the #2 team in the country.

In a tight and contested match, the Saints got on the board first in the second half after a scoreless first half. Bailey Whalley put away a penalty kick in the 57th minute after a foul in the box by Ben Fuller. The goal excited the team and it celebrated the goal and AQ was up 1-0.

The Saints held on to the lead until the 80th minute as Mount Vernon Nazarene missed a penalty kick but the Cougars equalized a few minutes after the miss. The match went to overtime where no team was able to pull out the victory. Nevertheless, the Saints were able to earn a draw against a very talented team.

AQ had the advantage in shots (16-14) as well as shots on goal (nine-five) particularly in the first half where the team held a seven to two shot edge. Aquinas also had more corner kicks with seven compared to two for the Cougars.

Whalley led the team in shots (six) as well as shots on goal (four). Franco Calabrese had three shots with two on goal while Mohammed Mustapha finished the game with two shots.

Defensively, it was a competitive match as both teams played aggressive soccer. Antonio Strassioto made for four saves for AQ in goal.

The Saints take on Indiana Tech next Saturday, September 28th in Fort Wayne, Indiana at 12:00 PM.
