The Aquinas women's soccer team fought back from a 2-0 deficit to earn a 2-2 tie with visiting Mt. Vernon Nazarene after two periods of extra time. The Saints are now 3-1-1 on the season.
Despite have twice as many shots as their visitors from Ohio in the first-half, the Saints found themselves trailing 1-0 heading into the half, and 2-0 just five minutes after the break. With the Saints controlling possession and peppering the MVNU goal with shots early, the Cougars scored against the run of play after earning a foul in the box in the 21st minute and converting the subsequent penalty-kick. Their lead doubled in the 51st when a poor Saints' clearance deflected off of an AQ defender and into the back of the net for a goal.
Undeterred, the Saints would fight back and regain momentum mid-way through the second-half, and finally broke through in the 68th minute.
Hannah Crum delivered a picture perfect free-kick from the left side of the field into the top corner to cut the lead in half. The Saints continued to press and earn shots, hitting the cross-bar twice in a ten minute run as they looked to tie the game. They eventually would do just that, scoring on an own-goal, this time by MVNU. After a cross into the box by the Saints, a Cougar defender attempted a clearance that went past their keeper for a 2-2 draw.
The Saints had more chances late in regulation, but were unable to convert. The teams played a pair of 10-minute extra-time periods, but neither could find the game winner. The Saints had six shots in extra-time on the way to 35 for the game, while MVNU had four of their 18 shots in extras. Both keepers made two saves in the final period to keep the game scoreless. Twenty-nine fouls were called in the game, with 18 called on MVNU.
The Saints will look to extend their unbeaten streak to four games when they host St. Xavier next Friday at 7:00 pm on the AQ Athletic Field.
