The Aquinas College men's hockey team improved its winning streak to three games after a weekend sweep over WHAC rivals Lawrence Tech. The Saints beat the Blue Devils on the road Friday night 5-2 and won at Southside tonight 8-2. The Saints are now an even 8-8 in WHAC play and 16-12 overall. They are now just .5 game behind LTU for third place in the WHAC standings.
On Friday night in Farmington Hills, the Saints jumped out to a 2-0 lead after a
Kyle Truax goal early in the first and a
Trent Kulczyk goal midway through the third. Truax had the assist on Kulczyk's ninth goal of the season. Lawrence Tech cut the deficit to 2-1 with a goal late in the second-period, but a power-play goal by
Russell Shengulette would give the Saints the two-goal cushion again. Shengulette's 12th on the year would prove to be the game-winner. The Saints made it 4-1 with a
Ryan Wolfe goal from
Nick Stockert, and after the Blue Devils cut it to 4-2, the Saints closed the deal on a 5-2 win after Stockert assisted
Will Kortz's first goal of the season. AQ outshot their hosts 41-29 on the day, with
Nick Ottenbacher making 27 saves in net for the Saints to earn the win.
The teams hit the road for an evening game tonight at Southside Ice Arena in front of a raucous home crowd for the Saints. Aquinas jumped out early, scoring less than four minutes into the game when
Brandon Rozema lit the lamp for his team-leading 16th goal of the year.
Greg McQuade picked up the assist.
Mike Curran made it 2-0 midway through the first-period, with assists to
Nick Stockert and
Ryan Wolfe on the play. Before the Blue Devils knew what hit them it was 3-0, thanks to a power-play goal by
Alex Klekotka.
Mason Stewart and
Trent Kulczyk had assists on Klekotka's 14th of the year.
The Saints would grow the lead to 6-0 thanks to a three-goal second period that saw
Darren Johnson and
Greg McQuade find the back of the net, sandwiching a power-play goal by
Mike Curran, his second goal of the game.

Mason Stewart,
Nick Long,
Trent Kulczyk and
Brandon Rozema all had assists during the period. The Blue Devils would try to claw back into the game, scoring twice in a 20-second span to cut the Saints' lead to 6-2, but Aquinas responded 40 seconds later with
Darren Johnson's second goal of the game to make it 7-2. Truax and
Thomas Davis assisted on the play.
Ryan Wolfe put the finishing touches on an impressive six-goal win with a goal at 16:53, assisted by Curran. Aquinas once again outshot LTU, this time by a 38-24 margin. Ottenbacher picked up his second win of the weekend over the Blue Devils, turning away 22 shots on the night.
The Saints are back in action with a home and home with Cleary University next week. The Saints host the Cougars on Friday night at 8:00 pm.
