The women's hockey team hosted Penn State University last night at Southside Ice Arena, and claimed a 2-1 victory over the visiting Nittany Lions. The win is the third in a row for the Saints, who are now 6-16 on the season.
The Saints jumped out to an early 1-0 lead just over three minutes into the game when
Madison Morgrette found the back of the net. She was assisted by
Mikayla Oppermann on the play. The Saints' lead grew to 2-0 midway through the first when
Morgan Kozar delivered a blast from the point on the powerplay.
Amelia Bartels and
Tori Feddema had the assists on Kozar's fifth goal of the year. Penn State got on the board late, scoring with just two minutes left to go in the period to cut the lead to 2-1 after 20 minutes of play.
After the high-scoring first-period, the two teams settled into a defensive battle for the final 40 minutes. Neither team was able to find the back of the net, thanks in part to strong goalie play on both sides, and in large part to the Saints' forecheck that prevented the Nittany Lions from creating any sort of odd man rush on the night. Goalie
Ally Kennedy made 29 saves on the night to earn the win in goal. The Saints outshot Penn State 34-30 on the evening.
The two teams are back in action this afternoon for a 4:30 puck drop at Southside Ice Arena.Â
