#12 Aquinas Defeats Rochester in Dominant Fashion

The Saints take down the Warriors 9-0 with Cunill, Olsen, and Shenk all scoring multiple goals

The #12 Aquinas women's soccer team got back to its winning ways over Rochester on Wednesday evening (Oct. 13). The Saints got the 9-0 win over the Warriors at the AQ Athletic Field with six different players scoring a goal.

Aquinas' overall record improves to 11-1-1 on the season with a 4-1-0 home record plus a 5-0-1 WHAC record, while Rochester's record drops to 0-10-0 overall and 0-6-0 in the WHAC.

Four goals were scored in the first half by the Saints with Laia Cunill netting the eventual game-winning goal in the fourth minute and then scoring her second goal of the game in the 24th minute. Cunill now has five goals on the season. The two other goals scored in the first 45 minutes were by Sydney Shenk in the 24th minute and Emily Olsen in the 39th minute. AQ dominated ball possession by leading in shots 23-1 in the first half.

Merin McDermott scored the opening goal of the second half for the Saints on a header from a corner kick for her sixth goal of the season in the 63rd minute. Less than five minutes later, Emma Gould put away her second goal of the season and Olsen followed that up with her second goal of the game and third of the season in the 73rd minute. Shenk also scored two goals in the game with her last one coming in the 77th minute, tying the team lead with nine on the season. Brittney Carter scored the final goal of the game in the 82nd minute for her first goal of the season.

Shenk and Carter also added assists in the game with Ariana Garcia, Macy Hollingsworth, Katelyn Kahael, America Lemus, and Candela Vigil-Escalera all picking up an assist throughout the night.

Braeleigh McCoy (4-0-1) made one save, while only playing the first 45 minutes as Maddi Vick and Liz Bays split second half duties. Megan Swanker collected 16 saves in the loss for Rochester and allowed nine goals.

The Saints took 47 total shots with 26 being on goal, while the Warriors only managed to get two shots off against the Saints defense with one being on net. AQ had seven attempts at a corner kick and RU had one opportunity, while Aquinas committed five fouls to the Rochester's six.

Aquinas will continue WHAC play at home by welcoming UNOH to the AQ Athletic Field on Saturday (Oct. 16). Kick-off scheduled for 1:00 PM with the Racers receiving votes in the last top-25 poll.
