Aquinas Drops WHAC Matchup to #9 Indiana Tech in Close Game

Saints fall in a 1-0 game to the Warriors with the lone goal coming in the second half

The Aquinas men's soccer team losses a tough battle to #9 Indiana Tech on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 2). The WHAC conference matchup saw the Warriors score in the 66th minute for the lone goal as the Saints were shutout at the Warrior Athletic Field.

The loss dropped the Saints' record to 1-4-1 and now have a WHAC record of 1-1-0, while the Warriors' record improves to 9-1-0 and 3-0-0 in the WHAC.

Although the first half was scoreless, a tone was set that it was going to be a physical battle with 17 total fouls called along with three yellow cards given out. Aquinas had three shots on goal, but were kept off the board as Indiana Tech led in shots 7-3 through the first 45 minutes.

The Saints gained a great opportunity in the 60th minute of the second half as a Warrior player was issued their second yellow card of the game as IT went down a man. Four more yellow cards were given out along with 15 more fouls called in the second half. However, despite being a man up, in the 66th minute a defensive miscue by AQ led to an own goal for Indiana Tech. That goal stood as the only goal scored in the match with the Warriors winning 1-0.

Antonio Strassioto (1-4-1) had four saves in the loss with the only goal allowed being an own goal. Jaume Salvado gained the shutout win for IT and collected five saves.

Aquinas were outshot by Indiana Tech 15-6 over the course of the game, but the opportunities on goal were tied at five. AQ had one attempt at a corner kick with IT attempting 12, while the Saints committed 20 fouls to the Warriors' 12.

Aquinas will continue WHAC play by hosting Lawrence Tech on Wednesday (Oct. 6) at the AQ Athletic Field, with kick-off scheduled for 7:00 PM.
