The Aquinas women's volleyball team earned a unique split on Friday night (Oct. 1) in Rochester Hills in a tri-match tournament. AQ swept host Rochester by a 3-0 score in a WHAC contest before the Saints fell in a tough non-conference five-set match to Huntington in the nightcap. The top highlight of the night belonged to senior
Jackie Rozell, as the outside hitter recorded her 1,000th career kill during the sweep of the Warriors in the opener.
AQ made quick work of Rochester in the opener, sweeping the Warriors in straight sets, 25-18, 25-12, and 25-13. The back-and-forth five-setter against Huntington saw the Saints win sets one and three, but ultimately fall in a tight fifth set. Aquinas dropped the match 25-22, 19-25, 25-16, 18-25, and 11-15. After the split, AQ is 10-8 on the year and 2-2 in WHAC play.
During the opener, Rozell eclipsed the 1,000 kill mark with her very first putaway, making her the 11th Saint since 1998 to accomplish that feat. Rozell joins former teammates
Payton Klein and
Kylie Christensen in the club, as the duo both recorded their 1,000th kills last season.
Against Rochester, the Saints hit .278 and held the Warriors to a -.021 mark and nearly doubled RU in kills, 40-21. AQ was also far ahead in digs (50-35), aces (10-2), blocks (7-1), and assists (34-19).
Emily Jones led Aquinas with eight kills in 11 swings for a .636 hitting percentage, along with three block assists. Rozell and
Jordyn Carlyle each tallied seven kills, with Rozell hit .389 and did not commit an error, while Carlyle notched team-highs of 11 digs and three aces.
Both
Abbie Harpenau and
Abbi Perkins notched five kills, with Perkins tallying four blocks and three aces and Harpenau adding five digs and three block assists.
Cassie Sustrich handed out 34 assists to go with five digs, while
Jennifer Johnson picked up 11 digs.
Huntington recorded a 61-48 advantage in kills over the Saints in the nightcap, outhitting AQ by a .161 to .149 hitting percentage. Aquinas led in aces (9-8), while the Forresters came out on top in blocks (7-6), assists (61-48), and digs (81-65).
After the teams split the first four sets, they again were tied in set five at 10-10 after a Carlyle ace. Huntington, however, scored the next four points on consecutive kills before a Rozell kill stopped the run and made it 14-11. The Forresters closed the five-setter with a kill on the ensuing point to win the non-conference matchup.
Rozell posted a double-double of 14 kills and 10 digs, with Harpenau contributing 10 kills. Carlyle supplied nine kills and eight digs. Johnson picked up 19 digs and
Kenzi Dobosiewicz recorded 15 digs and five assists.
