The Saints took on the Lourdes Gray Wolves tonight (Oct. 22) for their first home match since October 13th. The match started off strong for AQ, with
Jenna Berens serving to a 6-0 lead. Aquinas held that lead in the first set for a commanding 25-14 victory. The second set was much closer, with both teams battling back-and-forth. The Saints were able to narrowly pull out a 25-23 win in the second set for a 2-0 lead in the match.
The third set started with a 7-0 lead for the Gray Wolves and they held that lead throughout the set for a 25-21 set victory, bringing the match score to 2-1.
Aquinas jumped out to a 12-4 lead in the fourth set. Lourdes proceeded to rally back, bringing the score to 14-12 in favor of Lourdes. Both teams went back and forth until the Saints pulled off six-straight points towards the end of the set, bringing the score from 17-19 to 23-19. Lourdes couldn't quite pull off the comeback, as AQ won the fourth and final set by a score of 25-23.
The 3-1 victory brings Aquinas to an overall record of 18-12, with a record of 9-6 in conference play. AQ currently sits in sixth place in the WHAC standings.
The Saints beat out the Gray Wolves in nearly every significant statistical category, paving the way for the win. AQ led in kills (57-40), hitting percentage (.174-.113), assists (55-39), aces (10-7), and total blocks (15-7). The teams drew in digs at 67 apiece.
Meredith Kraus was the team leader for the Saints in kills for the sixth-straight match, notching 15 kills (.167). Not only was Kraus an offensive menace again, but she also contributed an assist, nine digs, and two total blocks.
Jackie Rozell was second on the team with 13 kills (.242) while also adding two digs and five block assists.
Abbi Perkins had eight kills with an impressive .300 hitting percentage. Perkins added two aces, a dig, and whopping six total blocks.
Chloe Mitchell had a great game, putting up 48 assists in four sets. Additionally, Mitchell added three kills (.375), 12 digs, a service ace, and five block assists.
Adrien Yondo kept her hot streak alive, adding another 18 digs in the winning effort tonight.
Aquinas is back in action tomorrow (Oct. 23) at 1:00 PM in the Sturrus Center to take on Siena Heights.
