AQ Stumbles This Weekend, Dropping Series to Maryville

Aquinas couldn't slow down Maryville, as AQ dropped both games by scores of 10-1 and 7-1

The Aquinas women's hockey team hit the road this past weekend to play three out-of-state games (Oct. 22-24). The Saints traveled to Lebanon, Illinois for the first game against McKendree University (Oct. 22), where the Saints fell to the Bearcats by a score of 5-1. AQ then traveled to St. Louis, Missouri to take on Maryville University for a two-game series on Saturday and Sunday (Oct. 23-24).

The first match against Maryville didn't quite go as planned, with the Saints stumbling out of the starting gate. AQ went down 2-0 in the first period before the Maryville Saints scored five more in the second period. Maryville would score two more in the third before Grace Waldo would get one back for the Saints at 11:06 in the third period. The goal was assisted by senior defender, Alyssa Buzar. Maryville would go on to score one more before the match ended, brining the final score to 10-1.

Laura Pointon started in net for AQ, saving 21 shots on 28 shots on target from Maryville through a period and a half. Kadynce Romijn relieved Pointon in the second period, saving 26 shots on 29 attempts through her period and a half in the net.

The second match for Aquinas was a similar result. Maryville put seven shots into the back of the net over three periods on 40 shots on target. Alyssa Exline scored the lone goal for the Saints at 2:15 left in the third period. The goal was assisted by freshman Lauryn Wood and senior Natalie Vaitas.

Romijn started in net for AQ, making 20 saves on 24 shots on net. Romijn was replaced by Ashley Suske halfway through the second period, who made 13 saves on 16 shots on target throughout the remaining period and a half.

After this weekend, AQ sits at an overall record of 2-3 with a 2-0 CCWHA conference record. The Saints have another busy upcoming weekend, as they take on Grand Valley State University for the two-game series (Oct. 29-30), followed by Rhode Island on Halloween Sunday (Oct. 31). The Saturday and Sunday games will be played at Southside Ice Arena.
