The Aquinas men's soccer team had its best offensive game of the 2021 season in the win over Siena Heights on Wednesday evening (Oct. 30). AQ scored two goals in the first half and another five in the second to steamroll SHU in the 7-0 blowout at the AQ Athletic Field.
Aquinas' overall record now stands at 5-5-3 with a WHAC record of 5-2-2, while Siena Heights' overall record is currently 5-6-2 and 2-5-2 in the WHAC. AQ has moved up to fourth place in the conference standings with the win and a loss by Madonna today with one more game left to play.
Aquinas came out of pregame hot by scoring in the fourth minute of play.
Ricardo Rittersberger started off his strong night with a cross in the box over to
Fin Pittock for the eventual game winner. This was Pittock's third goal of the season, which is tied for the team lead with two other teammates. The second goal came off the foot of
Mason Sills for his third goal of the season with Pittock chipping in the assist. AQ made the most of their chances in the first half with only recording six total shots and the only two that were on frame found the back of the net.
Aquinas poured it on in the second half, starting with a goal only 1:43 after the whistle blew. Rittersberger got his foot on the ball that came in on a corner kick from
Baptiste Bissessur for his second goal of the season. Rittersberger then turned around and collected his second assist of the night in the 56th minute as
Jasper Schinkel was the benefactor and put away his second goal this year. To cap off his night, Rittersberger scored again in the 64th minute for his third goal of the season with
Jackson Moore dishing out the assist.
Damir Sabanovic got into the action in the 83rd minute as he poked his first goal of the season past the goalkeeper with
Milan Hoefnagels assisting on the play. The last goal of the game was scored by Hoefnagles in the 87th minute as he put away his first collegiate goal with Schinkel helping out.
Rittersberger had a career night by collecting six points on two goals and two assists, all of which are single game highs in his career. Hoefnagles, Pittock, and Schinkel all turned in three point efforts by collecting a goal and an assist a piece.
Jared Ireland (4-0-2) continues to be a stalwart in net for Aquinas by shutting out his opponent in five of his six starts and collecting two more saves tonight. Jacob Wojciechowski took the loss for SHU by making one save and allowing seven goals.
Aquinas outshot Siena Heights by a big 20-8 margin and also put eight shots on net compared to SHU's two. AQ also held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks, while Aquinas committed 15 fouls to Siena Heights' nine.
Aquinas will wrap up the regular season against Concordia with senior day at the AQ Athletic Field on Saturday (Oct. 30), with kick-off scheduled for 3:00 PM.
