The Aquinas women's volleyball squad took on the Lawrence Tech Blue Devils tonight (Oct. 29) for the second-to-last home match of the regular season. The match kicked off with a big 25-20 set victory with
Meredith Kraus netting five kills. Aquinas overcame an early deficit before rallying back late to pick up the six-point win.
The second set played at a similar pace to the first set, with both teams going back and forth with the score tied at 20-20. However, a late rally by the Saints with
Chloe Mitchell serving brought the Saints to a 25-21 second set victory.
The third set was wild, as the Blue Devils came out to an early 6-2 lead. AQ rallied back with a massive 18-5 run to bring the score to 20-11. Lawrence Tech proceeded to make a rally of their own, bringing the score to 24-22. After a timeout from Aquinas, Kraus ended the match with a huge spike to give the Saints a three-set sweep.
Aquinas now improves to 20-13 on the season with an 11-7 WHAC record. Aquinas has just two more regular season matches on the schedule with a match tomorrow (Oct. 30) and this upcoming Wednesday (Nov. 3).
The Saints held a slight advantage in most statistical categories, beating out the Blue Devils in kills (36-31), hitting percentage (.179-.106), assists (31-29), service aces (12-9), and blocks (7-3). Lawrence Tech held the advantage in digs (55-46).
Jackie Rozell and Kraus led the attack for AQ with 13 kills each (.273 and .444 hitting percentages, respectively). Kraus added three digs and a block assist, while Rozell added four digs herself.
Mitchell had her normal do-it-all performance, with 30 assists, two kills (.333), three service aces, and seven digs.
Jenna Berens had a whopping four aces in three sets to lead the team in the ace department.
Adrien Yondo played well defensively, leading the team in digs with 12, along with an ace and an assist.
The Saints will play their final home match of the regular season tomorrow (Oct. 30) at 1:00 PM. The event at Sturrus Center will be Senior Day, honoring all of the volleyball seniors for their time and commitment to the program.
