Late Goal Pushes Grand Valley Ahead of Aquinas in 3-2 Game

Wood and Vaitas score, but GVSU pulls ahead late for a second win in as many days

The Aquinas women's hockey team took on the Grand Valley State Lakers tonight (Oct. 30) for the second game of the series. The home match began at 7:30 PM. The first period started off with an early goal for the Lakers, scored at just one minute and fourteen seconds into the game. After some battling back-and-forth, the Saints equalized the game at one apiece with a goal from Natalie Vaitas. The goal scored at 9:54 in the first period was assisted by Julia DeHondt and Alyssa Exline.

AQ pulled the match to 2-1 in its favor after a second period goal, scored at 7:54. The goal was scored by Lauryn Wood was collected after Morgan Morgrette put the puck off the post. Alyssa Buzar got in trouble for a two-minute minor at 7:08 in the second. Just a minute later, a brawl occurred on the ice, resulting in two disqualifications for both Aquinas and Grand Valley State. During the time the referees were sorting everything out, Aquinas was handed a two-minute minor for unsportsmanlike conduct. This resulted in a five-on-three opportunity for the Lakers that they capitalized on at 6:05, bringing the score level at 2-2.

The third period calmed down a bit, with both sides getting some quality opportunities to score. Grand Valley broke the even game with a late goal in the third that would turn out to be the game winner. The 3-2 result now puts AQ at 2-5 for the season with a 2-2 conference record.

Ashley Suske started the first two periods in net for the Saints, saving 22 of 24 shots on target. Laura Pointon relieved Suske for the third period, saving six of seven shots on net. Grand Valley outshot the Saints by a total of 31 shots on target to 27.

Aquinas will be back on the ice tomorrow (Oct. 31) against Rhode Island at Southside Ice Arena. The puck is set to drop at 2:00 PM.
