Saints Score Walk-Off Win in Big Overtime Shutout Win

Lauryn Wood buries the puck in the net for a 1-0 win in overtime

The AQ women's hockey squad played its third match of the weekend this afternoon (Oct. 31) against the visiting Rhode Island University Rams. After the puck dropped at 2:40 PM, it was an even stalemate in the first period. Laura Pointon started in net for the Saints, grabbing nine saves on nine shots in the first period. Aquinas put 13 shots on target in the first period against a strong Rams defense, but none of them found the back of the net. The first period ended with a score of 0-0.

The second and third period was much of the same story. Both teams had a handful of opportunities, but both goalies could not be beaten. Pointon had 32 saves at the end of regulation while Jenelle Kelleher, Rhode Island's goalie, had 37 saves.

The match went to overtime with three-on-three play. Alyssa Exline was sent to the box with a holding call, giving the Rams a 4 on 3 power play chance. Rhode Island put a shot off the post, and another was just short of the line, but couldn't quite get into the net. Alyssa Exline came out of the box and provided a pass across the crease to Lauryn Wood, who put the puck into the top corner of the net for a walk-off goal in overtime. The goal was scored at 0:55 in overtime.

Laura Pointon earned a shutout win with 38 saves on 38 shots on net. The Saints improve to a record of 3-5 with a conference record of 2-2.

The Saints are back in action this upcoming Friday (Nov. 5) with a home match against Central Michigan.
