The #12 Aquinas women's soccer team remained unbeaten in WHAC play with a 2-1 road victory at Lawrence Tech on Wednesday night (Oct. 6) in Southfield. AQ netted a pair of first-half goals and held off a late push from the Blue Devils to earn its 10th win of the 2021 season.
Â
For the second time this year, the Saints have posted a five-game win streak. Aquinas' first five-game streak was stopped by #7 Marian on Sept. 18. Since that defeat, AQ has ran off five more victories and have outscored its opponents 24-2 during that stretch.Â
Â
With the win, Aquinas improves to 10-1 on the season and 4-0 in league play. The Saints moved up to 12th in the country earlier in the day after being tied for 13th place in the previous top-25 poll. It is the highest ranking in school history.
Â
On Wednesday, AQ jumped on Lawrence Tech (4-6-1, 1-3 WHAC) early, taking a 1-0 lead in just the sixth minute of the game.
Hannah Crum took an early corner and put it towards the far post where
Merin McDermott put it in the back of the net on a solid header for her fifth goal of the season. That first tally came at the 5:42 mark and the Saints would double their lead 25 minutes later.
Â
At 30:28, freshman
Sandra Segovia netted her first goal in an AQ uniform, also scoring off a header on a corner kick from Crum. Segovia's first career tally put the Saints in front 2-0, which would be Aquinas' lead at halftime. Aquinas outshot LTU 14-1 in the opening 45 minutes.
Â
While the Saints also held a 13-3 advantage in shots in the second half, the Blue Devils capitalized on one of their three shots over the final 45 minutes. DiOnna Hill's header at the 80:54 mark cut AQ's lead in half, making it a 2-1 contest. From there, the Aquinas defense tightened up and did not allow another LTU shot, closing out the victory in the final nine minutes.
Â
Aquinas held a 27-4 lead in shots, including a 12-4 mark in shots on goal. The Saints took 11 of the game's 12 corners, with both goals coming on corner kicks. Crum's two assists gave her eight helpers, which is tied with
Ariana Garcia for the team lead. Crum took 12 shots on Wednesday, including five on target.Â
Â
Goalkeeper
Braeleigh McCoy allowed just the one Blue Devil goal, stopping three shots in the victory.Â
Â
Sydney Shenk attempted four shots (two on goal) and
Laia Cunill registered three shots. Garcia and
Jenna Konwerski took two shots each for the Saints.
Â
AQ stays on the road this Saturday (Oct. 9) for a 5:00 p.m. game in Ohio. The Saints will match up with Lourdes in a WHAC contest in Sylvania.
