The Saints' women's hockey team took on the nationally ranked Miami of Ohio RedHawks this evening (Nov. 12) in a CCWHA matchup. The game started with the RedHawks picking up an early goal at 15:26 in the first period. Isabelle Aerni wrapped around the net and found Katie Sciales, who tucked the puck over
Laura Pointon's right shoulder. The remainder of the first period was very even with each side getting just a couple opportunities. The Saints had a powerplay at the end of the first but were unable to capitalize with
Lauryn Wood putting a shot off the post. Miami outshot Aquinas 12-7 in the period with the score staying 1-0 entering the second.
The second period started off with a bang as Wood found the back of the net at 14:48.
Natalie Vaitas was on the assist with an impressive pass across the attacking third of the ice. However, three minutes later the RedHawks scored a goal of their own, bringing the score to 2-1. Just 21 seconds later, Miami scored again, brining the score to 3-1.
With about five minutes left in the second period,
Jenna Hausman had a great one-on-one opportunity, but Miami's goalie manager to push the shot off to the side. Miami outshot Aquinas 16-9 in the second period and held onto a 3-1 lead coming into the final period of play.
In the third period, Miami controlled play for the majority of the period. The RedHawks put 17 shots on target to Aquinas' three. Neither team managed to score, resulting in a 3-1 victory for visiting Miami. Miami outshot the Saints 45-19.
After the game, Aquinas is now 5-7 on the season with a CCWHA record of 2-4.
Pointon had another solid game in net, saving 42 of 45 shots for a 93.3% save percentage.
Aquinas will play Miami again tomorrow (Nov. 13) at 7:30 PM. The game will again be played at Southside Ice Arena.
