The AQ women's hockey team played two games this weekend (Nov. 6-7) with a road game against Central Michigan and a home game against the Michigan State Spartans. The Saints were all business on Saturday (Nov. 6) in their game against Central Michigan. Aquinas started the scoring with an early goal in the first period.
Alyssa Buzar scored the goal at 16:08, the goal was assisted by sophomore forward
Grace Waldo. Just six minutes later, AQ scored again, with
Alyssa Exline scoring the goal, assisted by
Kylie Rancilio. Aquinas entered the locker room after one period of play with a 2-0 lead.
Lauryn Wood made the score 3-0 with six minutes left of play, assisted by sophomore forward
Anna Castle. The Saints put two more shots into the back of the net in the third period, with the first goal coming at 5:59 from Eline, assisted by Wood and
Jenna Hausman. Just twenty seconds later,
Natalie Vaitas put a shot in, assisting the goal was
Chloe Donnelly.
It was a stout performance from AQ, as the outshot Central Michigan 88-8.
Laura Pointon picked up her second shutout win of the weekend.
In the game against the Michigan State Spartans (Nov. 7), the game opened up with MSU holding possession of the puck for most of the first period. Vaitas had a great one-on-one opportunity but was walled out by the Spartan goalie. The Spartans outshot the Saints 20-4 in the first period, but Pointon kept the puck out to keep the score at 0-0 in the first intermission.
The Saints opened up the scoring first with a rebound goal from Wood. The goal at 10:56 in the second period was assisted by Exline and
Anna Castle. The Spartans earned a power play at the end of the second from a body checking penalty on
Julia DeHondt. MSU capitalized with a powerplay goal to bring the score level at 1-1.
The scoreboard opened up in the third period with Michigan State scoring early in the third to bring the score to 2-1. With 2:15 left in the third period, Michigan State scored again to bring the score to 3-1. Just thirty seconds later, Exline scored a rebound goal off of
Kylie Rancilio's shot, crediting her with an assist. Aquinas pulled its goalie in an attempt to tie the game, but MSU was able to score an empty net goal to bring the final score to 4-2.
AQ was outshot by a total of 54-19, with Pointon picking up fifty saves.
The results from the last two games puts Aquinas' overall record at 5-6 with a conference record of 2-3.
Aquinas will be back on the ice next weekend (Nov. 12-13) with two conference home games against Miami of Ohio.
