The Aquinas Women's Hockey team did battle this weekend as they competed against the local Davenport University Panthers. In the two games, the Saints tied the first game 3-3 and won the second game 2-1.
In the first game the Saints were the first team to strike when
Jenna Blackwell found the back of the net at 13:38 of the first period. Blackwell was unassisted in her goal. The first period ended with the Saints up 1-0.Â
In the second period the Saints scored once again when they scored at 9:49. This time
Chloe Donnelly scored unassisted.Â
The third period saw plenty of action when Aquinas scored first. Donnelly scored once again, and was assisted on the goal by #19
Alyssa Buzar. This goal was scored at 8:36 in the period. The Panthers would not go quietly though as they scored three unanswered goals at 7:48, 7:10, and 1:06 to force the game into overtime.
The Saints and Panthers were locked in a gridlock during overtime and neither team was able to score, ending the game in a tie.Â
The Saints took 45 shots in the game. On the defensive end, goalie
Ashley Suske faced 15 shots with 12 saves.Â
In the second game of the weekend, the Saints were able to get back in the win column with a 2-1 Victory over Davenport.
The saints and panthers went back and forth in the first period but the period ended in a stalemate with neither team being able to score. Davenport got called for Crosschecking at 4:39, but the Saints were unable to capitalize on the power play. Aquinas out shot Davenport 16-7 in the period.
There was more action in the second period as both teams would score.
Zoe Bergen was called for roughing at 15:33 and the panthers capitalized on it to score at 13:47 for the power play goal. The saints would then score a power play goal of their own though when
Chloe Donnelly was assisted by
Grace Waldo and
Alyssa Buzar. The saints had two more penalties in the period for interference, and successfully defended against them both to end the period 1-1. Aquinas once again out shot Davenport in the period, 11-5.
In the third period, Davenport was penalized for crosschecking at 13:38. This set up another power play goal for the Saints at 12:29. This time
Alyssa Exline scored and was assisted
Anna Castle. The saints were then able to play through a string of roughing calls at the end of the game to secure the win. The saints edged out the panthers 8-7 in the period. The Saints tallied 35 shots opposed to Davenports 21.Â
The women's hockey team is next in action December 11, when they host Roosevelt University. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 PMÂ
