Aquinas Falls to Cornerstone in Road Rivalry Game

The Aquinas men's basketball team traveled to Cornerstone for a big WHAC rivalry game on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 20) at CU. The home Golden Eagles held a 49-33 advantage at halftime and sealed the win by a 90-67 final.

The loss moves the visiting Saints to a 4-8 overall record and 4-7 in conference play. Cornerstone was hard to stop as the Golden Eagles went 38-70 (54.3%) from the field on the day. The win advances CU to 11-4 overall and 8-2 in the WHAC. 

The Golden Eagles went 20-34 (58.8%) from the floor in the first half, hitting five triples and headed into the locker room at halftime with a 16-point lead. Aquinas was unable to close the margin as the Saints went 15-34 (44.1%) after the halfway mark to Cornerstone's 50% second half shooting percentage.

AQ recorded 29 rebounds as the Golden Eagles tallied 43 as a team. Cornerstone recorded 22 assists as AQ only totaled 11. The Golden Eagles also had an 8-1 edge on the Saints in blocks and had six steals to Aquinas's five steal total.

The Saints were led by Sammie Ryans who totaled 13 points, shooting 5-9 from the floor and adding three rebounds. Deric Murray tallied 12 points, knocking down two shots from downtown. Jesse Hillis recorded 11 points, five rebounds, and five assists. 

Gabe Overway went 4-5 from the floor, notching nine points for the Saints. Justin Lary totaled seven points and three rebounds while Trevor Ballard and Tevin Ali each added five points.

Aquinas is back on the court tomorrow (Feb. 21st) as the Saints remain on the road traveling to Rochester Hills for another WHAC showdown. The game against Rochester is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
