AQ Men Score Seven Goals in Friday Win Over Hope

Saints tally six of game’s first seven goals, Long and Rozema each score twice

The Aquinas men's hockey team netted seven goals on Friday night (Feb. 19) at Southside Ice Arena, as the Saints took down visiting Hope in a 7-2 non-conference victory. AQ scored the game's first three goals and six of the first seven goals before finishing off its first win of the season.

Originally scheduled to play Lawrence Tech on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 20), those games were cancelled. Aquinas quickly was able to schedule Hope and the teams met in an early-season non-conference contest. The win puts AQ at 1-3 on the season, while Hope drops to 0-1.

Aquinas scored twice in the first period, with Tom Davis opening the scoring on a feed from Darren Johnson with 6:35 remaining. The Saints doubled their lead with a goal from Nick Long, assisted by Alex Klekotka. That came at the 3:54 mark and put AQ in front 2-0 after the opening period.

Long scored less than two minutes into the second period, as Klekotka and Mason Stewart assisted on the tally. Hope made it 3-1 with a tally at the 7:05 mark, but Aquinas responded with a pair of late power play goals to close out the second period.

Brandon Rozema scored with 1:45 remaining off a Kyle Truax assist for the 4-1 lead, while Rozema followed up with a helper on Mike Curran's goal with 32 seconds left.

Rozema scored again, less than 90 seconds into the third period for a 6-1 lead. Greg McQuade was credited with the assist. After a second Hope goal, Johnson found the back of the net, with Davis returning the favor with an assist after the duo teamed on the game's opening goal.

AQ outshot Hope by a 41-27 tally, while Hope was whistled for five penalties. The Saints committed three penalties.

Roman Malkov earned the victory in net and stopped 25 shots for the win.

As part of a second straight rescheduled game, Aquinas will face Calvin on the road at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday night (Feb. 20).
