The Aquinas men's hockey team topped a West Michigan opponent for the second straight, as the Saints defeated Calvin by a 5-1 score on Saturday night (Feb. 20) in Grand Rapids. The four-goal victory after AQ took down Hope by a 7-2 final on Friday night (Feb. 19) at Southside.
With the pair of victories, Aquinas is 2-3 on the season, while Calvin drops to 2-2 overall.
AQ jumped out to a 3-0 lead on Saturday night, with Nick Stockert tallying a power play goal with 13:03 remaining in the first period. Brandon Rozema was credited with the assist on the opening tally. The Saints would score again four minutes later, as Augustus Hickle found the back of the net off a feed from Kyle Truax and Greg McQuade. It was 2-0 after the opening frame.
Darren Johnson made it 3-0 with a late goal in the second period, scoring with 1:10 remaining on an assist from Nick Long.
It was 3-1 midway through the third period, when Truax took a feed from Alex Klekotka and scored at the 12:05 mark for a three-goal cushion. Hickle closed out the scoring with his second goal of the night, making it a 5-1 score with a tally from Tom Davis at the 3:52 mark of the final period.
Aquinas outshot Calvin by a wide 41-21 margin and the Saints committed nine fouls to just seven for Calvin. Nick Ottenbacher earned the win in net for AQ, making 20 saves to record the victory.
The Saints are in action three times this week, as AQ is on the road this Thursday (Feb. 25) at 7:00 p.m. to face Adrian before a pair of WHAC games against Indiana Tech on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 26-27).
