AQ Women Notch 53-44 Rivalry Victory at Cornerstone

The Aquinas women's basketball team traveled down the road to face crosstown rival Cornerstone in a big WHAC showdown on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 20). The Saints were 19-20 from the charity stripe down the stretch, earning AQ the win over the Golden Eagles, 53-44.

With AQ's best free throw shooting percentage of the year, the Saints advance to a 5-6 overall record and are 5-6 in conference. The Golden Eagles move to 7-12 overall and 4-7 in WHAC play. 

Today's contest was evenly matched as the teams headed into the fourth quarter, with AQ holding a five-point advantage. The Golden Eagles were forced to foul in the final seconds of the game, and Aquinas got all six bonus free throws to go. The Golden Eagles missed the last four of their last-second shots, sealing the win for the Saints.

Aquinas led Cornerstone shooting 32.7% from the floor and were 19-20 from the free-throw line while the Golden Eagles finished with a 26.3% shooting percentage and were 12-16 from the foul line. 

AQ held an advantage for 33 minutes in today's matchup, edged the Golden Eagles in rebounds (41-37) and steals (6-5). The Saints and Cornerstone were tied on the stat sheet in turnovers (13-13) and assists (10-10). 

The Saints were led by Jaylynn Williams, who totaled 13 points and four rebounds. Marissa Brady finished with her 10th double-double, recording 10 points and 15 rebounds. Brady neared a triple-double by notching all seven blocks for AQ. Brady also had a pair of steals and added three assists.

JaKarri Alven tallied eight points for the Saints shooting 3-6 and added a pair of rebounds. Mauriya Barnes totaled seven points and Jordyn Wigg finished with five points, two assists, and two boards. 

AQ returns to action tomorrow (Feb. 21) as the Saints travel to Rochester Hills, Michigan to take on the Warriors of Rochester in another WHAC contest. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
