The Aquinas women's basketball team hosted rival Cornerstone in a conference matchup on Wednesday night (Feb. 3) as the Saints edged out the Golden Eagles in a 74-67 win. The victory advances AQ to 1-1 overall and 1-1 in WHAC play after losing its season opener Monday (Feb. 1) to Rochester.
The Saints led wire-to-wire, and headed into the locker room at halftime with a 42-31 advantage. AQ, which had a 55-40 advantage in the third, hit a dry spot as the Golden Eagles surged, going on a 9-0 run to end the quarter.
Aquinas battled back in the fourth quarter and held onto their lead, outscoring CU in three of the four quarters. The loss moves Cornerstone to 4-9 overall and 1-4 in conference play.
AQ led in field goal percentage shooting 47.1% as a team to that of 41% for Cornerstone, with each squad having three players in double digits. The Saints went 8-21 from downtown and recorded 40 total rebounds. The Golden Eagles went 6-19 from beyond the arc and finished with 33 rebounds. Aquinas led the Golden Eagles in blocks (5-1) while Cornerstone held the steal advantage (10-3).
The Saints were led by
Marissa Brady, who tallied game-highs of 18 points and 17 rebounds, including a double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds) in the second half alone. It is Brady's second double-double in two games. Brady shot 6-10 from the floor and made 6-7 free throws and added three blocks in her 33 minutes on the floor tonight.
Daz'Sha Day followed up her 18-point performance on Monday night tallying 14 points in tonight's win for the Saints. Day shot 6-9 from the floor and added four assists. The third scorer in double digits,
Brighton Miller, recorded 11 points on the night with a pair of threes. Miller also notched four assists for AQ.
JaKarri Alven totaled eight points and four rebounds for the Saints.
Jaylynn Williams also added eight points while
Mauriya Barnes finished with seven points and added a pair of assists.
The Saints are back in play tomorrow (Feb. 4th) as they travel to Southfield, Michigan to take on the Blue Devils of Lawrence Tech in another WHAC contest. Tip-off is set for 6:00 PM.
