Aquinas Women Top Adrian 6-2 in Season Opener

Saints score four times in second period; AQ had six different goal scorers

The Aquinas women's hockey team notched an impressive season-opening 6-2 victory at Adrian on Saturday morning (Feb. 6). The teams were supposed to play on Friday night (Feb. 5) at Southside Ice Arena, but inclement weather forced a postponement of that contest. AQ notched four second-period goals and had six different Saints find the back of the net in Saturday's victory.

With the win, AQ is 1-0 in the new year and Adrian drops to 2-1 overall.

Adrian netted the only first period goal before the Saints scored three consecutive times in the second period to open a 3-1 edge. Freshman Anna Castle opened the scoring for AQ at the 15:00 mark of the second period on a feed from Madison Morgrette, followed by fellow newcomer Olivia Menard putting the Saints in front just a minute later.

The 3-1 lead came on a tally from Natalie Vaitas at the 10:33 mark; Vaitas also assisted on Mennard's previous goal. Mikayla Oppermann and Chloe Donnelly were credited with assists on Vaitas' tally.

Adrian trimmed the deficit to 3-2 a few minutes later, but less than a minute after the Bulldogs goal, the Saints found the back of the net for the fourth time. Morgan Kozar took a feed from Castle for the goal and put AQ out in front 4-2 after two periods.

It was Opperman's turn early in the third, connecting on a power play goal just a few minutes into the period. Freshman Lauren Tulloch closed the scoring with the team's sixth goal – also coming on a power play – with 7:43 remaining. Breanna Domrase notched the assist.

In net, senior Ally Kennedy allowed just two goals on the 29 shots she faced. She recorded 27 saves to earn the victory.

The teams will meet again on Sunday (Feb. 7) at Southside with a 3:00 p.m. puck drop between the Saints and Bulldogs.
