Saints Men Fall to Davenport at Home, 8-2

The Aquinas men's hockey team dropped an 8-2 home decision to visiting Davenport on Saturday night (Feb. 6) at Southside Ice Arena. After an early 1-1 tie, the Panthers scored five straight goals to take control of the non-league contest and pull away for the road win.

AQ was originally scheduled to face Cleary in a home-and-home series on Friday (Feb. 5) and Saturday, but those games were cancelled. The Saints and Panthers came together to schedule the non-conference game, as they were not scheduled to play any other time during the season. With the loss, Aquinas drops to 0-3, while DU is 1-0 on the year.

Davenport scored just seven seconds into the game, perhaps catching the Saints off guard and taking the quick 1-0 lead. Aquinas fired right back, scoring 47 seconds later, as Mike Curran took a feed from Nick Stockert and deposited it in the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1.

From there, the Panthers added two more first-period goals, another goal in the second, and two early goals in the third period for a 6-1 advantage. Mitchell Hoon stopped the run at the 11:27 mark of the third period, scoring a goal off a Daniel Nelson assist to make it 6-2.

DU netted the final two goals of the game to close the scoring.

Nick Ottenbacher stopped 31 shots in net for the Saints. Darren Johnson totaled seven shots, Brandon Schwandt added six, and Kyle Truax attempted five shots.

AQ returns to the ice next weekend in a home-and-home series against Concordia. The Saints will play in Ann Arbor at 10:00 p.m. on Friday (Feb. 12) before an 8:00 p.m. home contest against the Cardinals on Saturday (Feb. 13).
