Aquinas Shuts Out Lawrence Tech in 3-0 Home Win

Shenk, Crum, and Struxsjo score goals; AQ owns 30-6 shot advantage

The Aquinas women's soccer team registered a 30-6 shot advantage and turned three of those attempts into goals to defeat Lawrence Tech at the AQ Athletic Field on Wednesday (Mar. 10) by a 3-0 score. AQ led 1-0 at the half and tacked on a pair of goals midway through the second half for the three-goal victory.

With the victory, Aquinas improves to 5-1 on the season and 3-0 in WHAC play. Lawrence Tech drops to 5-4-1 overall and 4-2-1 in league action. It was the Saints' third shutout in six games this season.

AQ went up 1-0 in the early portion of the first half, when Sydney Shenk took a pass from Hannah Crum just inside the box. She directed it towards the goal and off the left post, past the LTU goalkeeper for the 1-0 lead in the 16th minute.

The score would remain 1-0 at halftime. Aquinas outshot the visitors 11-6 in the opening 45 minutes, though LTU held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.

It was still a one-goal game until the 73:01 mark, when Crum – the reigning WHAC Offensive Player of the Week – tallied a header into the back of the net off a great pass from Filippa Struxsjo to make it 2-0. Less than two minutes later, Struxsjo was on the other end of a goal, scoring off a feed from Marie-Louise Abild for the 3-0 cushion.

Aquinas outshot Lawrence Tech 19-0 in the second half for a final tally of 30-6. It was a 13-3 advantage in shots on goal. AQ also registered a 7-0 edge in corners over the last 45 minutes for the 8-4 margin.

Braeleigh McCoy stopped three shots to notch her second shutout of the year.

Crum totaled seven shots (two on goal) and Struxsjo added five shots (three on net). Macy Hollingsworth (four), Olympia Katsouridis (four), Shenk (three, all on goal), Ariana Garcia (three), and Caitlin Rebera (two) all attempted multiple shots.

Aquinas heads to Rossford, Ohio on Friday (Mar. 12) for a noon kickoff against WHAC rival #11 UNOH.
