Saints Women Nearly Shut Out Davenport In 8-1 Win

The Aquinas women's hockey team faced the Davenport Panthers for the third time this season tonight (Mar. 12) on senior night inside Southside Ice Arena. The Saints captured the third win over the Panthers and remain undefeated on the year (8-0-1) after the 8-1 victory tonight.

AQ surged in the first period after honoring the six Saints seniors. A quick goal by Mikayla Oppermann (assisted by senior Natalie Vaitas) at 17:56 opened the scoring for the Saints.

Aquinas then rattled off four more goals in the first to go into the locker room with a 5-0 advantage. The four goals were netted by Jenna Blackwell, Vaitas, senior Breanna Domrase, and Lauren Tulloch.

An interference offense called on the Panthers gave AQ its second powerplay of the night. Oppermann was able to find the back of the goal (15:30) to distance the Saints even more with a 6-0 lead.

Another goal by Alyssa Buzar (assisted by Blackwell and Tulloch) in the second period and third period goal by Blackwell (assisted by senior Amelia Bartels and Anna Castle) gave the Saints the 8-0 advantage. As time was winding out, Davenport was able to find the back of the net with 17.7 seconds left in the contest. With an 8-1 final, the Panthers drop to 1-4 overall.

Oppermann and Blackwell led the Saints with both athletes scoring two goals and each having an assist. Bartels and Castle each tallied three assists. Tulloch and Vaitas each finished with one goal and one assist. Domrase and Buzar netted the other two goals for AQ. Olivia Menard added an assist for the Saints.

Aquinas grabbed the advantage over the Panthers in shots posting 52 to Davenport's 29 total. Senior Ally Kennedy allowed only one goal, recording 28 saves.

The Saints will be back on the ice tomorrow (Mar. 13) as AQ travels to Ann Arbor, Michigan to face Concordia at 4:00 PM.
