The Aquinas men's soccer team traveled to Southfield, Michigan on Wednesday night (Mar. 17) to face Lawrence Tech in a big WHAC matchup. The Saints and Blue Devils were squared away at 0-0 after 45 minutes of play, but a second-half goal by Aquinas grabbed the Saints the win. AQ improves to a 5-1 overall record, 4-1 WHAC.
AQ and LTU were evenly matched up throughout the contest only having a shot differential of one. Lawrence Tech grabbed the advantage in that regard, but Aquinas put four of their six attempts on goal as the Blue Devils recorded only three shots on goal of their seven total.
Although the two teams were deadlocked heading into the locker room, the Saints were able to find the back of the net at the 61:51 mark in the game. Freshman Jasper Schinkel netted the goal for the Saints and earned them the huge 1-0 victory as the Blue Devils remained scoreless. This is Schinkel's second game-winning goal this year, as he netted the 3-2 overtime goal to earn the win over Madonna on February 26th in the WHAC opener.
The loss tonight drops Lawrence Tech to 5-5 overall, 3-5 in conference play. Aquinas goalie Antonio Strassioto recorded two saves in today's 90 minutes.
The Saints return to the field on Friday (Mar. 19) as AQ travels to Lima, Ohio to take on the Racers of UNOH in another WHAC showdown. The game is scheduled to begin at 1:30 PM.
