Box Score The Aquinas men's lacrosse team traveled to Dearborn, Michigan to face UM Dearborn in the WHAC opener on Saturday afternoon (Mar. 20). The Saints overpowered the Wolverines offensively as AQ scored 10 goals in the second quarter, and earned the huge 21-5 victory. Aquinas advances to a 1-1 overall record, and are now 1-0 in the WHAC.
The Wolverines and the Saints got off to a slow start as AQ netted two goals to UM Dearborn's 0 in the first quarter. Aquinas rallied in the second quarter as Mitch Haggart scored in the first minute. The Saints never let up in the second scoring nine more, and the Wolverines had no answer. Heading into halftime Aquinas held a large 12-0 lead.
Aquinas kept the momentum going into the second half netted the first two goals of the third quarter (Haggart and Walker West). The Saints outscored the Wolverines 4-1 in the third and 5-4 in the fourth to claim the immense 21-5 victory. The loss drops the Wolverines to 0-1 overall, 0-1 WHAC.
It was AQ all the way as the Saints recorded 54 shots to UM Dearborn's 30 shot total. Aquinas grabbed the edge in ground balls (23-19) and face offs won (16-13). Defensively, Aquinas caused 10 Wolverine turnovers. Aquinas goalkeeper, Clayton Boerigter, posted 10 saves and had a .833 save percentage. Jack Kordek also played in goal and tallied a save.
AQ was led by Haggart who posted six goals and three assists. Zachary Sweet also totaled an impressive six goal total and had an assist. W. West finished with five goals, two assists, and two ground balls.
Nash West tallied three goals and two assists. N. West also added one ground ball. Jake Lee finished with two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Aiden Donnelly totaled five ground balls for Aquinas. Jack Rioux posted four ground balls while Matt Wagner came up with three.
The Saints return to the field Wednesday (Mar. 24) as AQ hosts Indiana Tech in another WHAC showdown. The game will take place at the AQ Athletic Field and will begin at 7:00 PM against the Warriors.
