The #18 Aquinas women's soccer team scored three times in the opening 12 minutes on Saturday (Mar. 20) to notch a 3-0 home victory over Lourdes at the AQ Athletic Field. Aquinas dominated control on Saturday and used a huge 26-2 advantage in shots to roll to its sixth straight WHAC victory to start the season.
Winners of all four home games, AQ improves to 8-1 on the season and 6-0 in WHAC play, while Lourdes drops to 4-9 overall and 1-7 in conference action. The Saints have outscored their opponents by a 17-2 margin at home this season.
In addition to the 26-2 shot margin, Aquinas held a 9-0 advantage in shots on goal and an 8-0 edge in corner kicks. Both teams committed eight fouls.
The Saints had a corner kick in the fifth minute of the game that Hannah Crum sent towards the box. It went directly to Madison Mohr, who redirected it past the Lourdes goalkeeper for the early 1-0 lead. It was Mohr's first goal of the 2021 campaign.
Four minutes later, AQ struck again with the help of a corner kick. Ariana Garcia took the corner kick but passed it to Macy Hollingsworth rather than sending it near the goal. Hollingsworth then drilled a shot from just outside the box and put it in the top right corner of the net for the 2-0 lead and her second goal of the year.
At the 11:10 mark, the Saints went ahead 3-0 as Crum found Sydney Shenk just inside the box with a nice feed. Shenk fired a shot to the bottom right of the net and past a diving Lourdes keeper for her fifth tally of the season. It was 3-0 in the opening 12 minutes of action. AQ took that three-goal advantage to halftime, outshooting the Gray Wolves 16-1 in the first 45 minutes.
Neither team would add to the scoreboard in the second half, but Aquinas outshot Lourdes 10-1 and recorded all five corner kicks over the final 45 minutes.
Crum took seven shots, including two on goal, to go with her two assists. Shenk recorded four shots, Garcia added three, and Hollingsworth attempted a pair of shots.
Braeleigh McCoy played all 90 minutes and did not need to make a save, as Lourdes was unable to put a shot on net.
The Saints head to Pontiac on Wednesday (Mar. 24) for a 1:00 p.m. WHAC contest against Rochester.
