The Aquinas men's soccer team earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Cornerstone on Wednesday afternoon (Mar. 24) at the AQ Athletic Field. Sophomore
Giuseppe Calabrese netted the first goal of his Aquinas career at the 14:10 mark for the game's lone goal.
Wednesday's win moves the Saints to 6-2 on the season and 5-2 in WHAC play, while Cornerstone drops to 4-4-1 overall and 4-3-1 in conference action.
AQ dominated possession in the victory, owning a 24-5 edge in total shots and a 9-0 advantage in shots on goal. The Saints also were on top in corner kicks, 11-2. It was a physical game with 31 total fouls (18 on CU, 13 against AQ) and seven yellow cards (four on Cornerstone, three on Aquinas).
The game's only goal was a terrific one for AQ. In the 15th minute,
Theo Maye made a couple of nifty one-on-one moves on the right side to get by his defender and cross a ball into the box. Calabrese took it off the bounce and put it past the CU keeper into the bottom right of the net.
The Saints took the 1-0 lead to the halftime, owning a 12-1 edge in shots after 45 minutes. AQ had a few solid scoring chances in the second half – including a penalty kick in the 76th minute – but were unable to double the lead to 2-0. The Aquinas defense was strong throughout, allowing just two shots from CU over the final 25 minutes.
Goalie
Antonio Strassioto earned the easy shutout, not having to make a save in the victory. Maye took five shots in the game – including two on goal – to go with his assist.
Jasper Schinkel attempted four shots (two on goal), while
Liam Travers and
Bailey Whalley took three apiece.
Aquinas is home again this Saturday (Mar. 27) at 6:00 p.m., when the Saints host Lourdes at the AQ Athletic Field.
