The Aquinas men's soccer team collected a solid home victory on Saturday evening (Mar. 27), as the Saints notched a 3-0 win over visiting Lourdes at the AQ Athletic Field. Aquinas netted a pair of first-half goals and added an insurance goal midway through the second half to top the Gray Wolves for its third shutout in the last four games.
AQ and Lourdes came into the game with nearly identical WHAC records. The Saints are now 7-2 overall and 6-2 in WHAC play, while Lourdes drops to 8-6-1 on the season and 5-3-1 in conference action. Six of Aquinas' seven victories this season are by shutouts, including each of the last five wins.
Theo Maye played a role in all three AQ goals on Saturday. At the 29:33 mark of the first half, Maye took a free kick after a Lourdes foul.
Liam Travers leapt in the box and took the Maye cross off his head and put it past the Gray Wolves goalie to the top of the net for game's first goal. It was the first tally of Travers' career at AQ.
The Saints took advantage of another Lourdes miscue, as the Gray Wolves picked up a yellow card and foul in the 41st minute. Maye took the free kick and deposited it in the bottom corner of the net to give Aquinas the 2-0 lead.
AQ earned a corner kick midway through the second half and Maye took it for the Saints. Maye sent a great ball into the box and
Joshua Freeman-Wright headed it into the net for his second goal of the season and a 3-0 Saints lead.
Maye's goal and two assists give him the Aquinas lead in both categories, as he now has five goals and six assists on the year. Lourdes actually outshot the Saints 12-10, but AQ held an 8-4 edge in shots on goal. There were 25 total fouls in the game; 13 on Aquinas and 12 called on Lourdes.
Antonio Strassioto earned the victory and made four saves, including a couple of strong deflections to keep Lourdes off the scoreboard.
The men are back in action on Wednesday (Mar. 31) at 4:00 p.m. against Rochester at the AQ Athletic Field.
