The Aquinas men's soccer team put together a 4-0 home victory over Rochester on Wednesday (Mar. 31) at the AQ Athletic Field, earning its seventh shutout win of the season. AQ led 1-0 at halftime, then scored a pair of early second half goals to pull away from the Warriors.
With the victory – the third straight for the Saints – Aquinas moves to 8-2 on the season and 7-2 in conference play. AQ's last six victories have come by the shutout variety. Rochester drops to 4-9 on the season and 2-8 in WHAC action.
Four Saints scored in the win and a newcomer in net tallied the shutout victory. In the 37th minute,
Jake Ireland took a long pass from
Alberto Teatin off a free kick and played it in the box. He delivered a nice shot to the lower right corner of the net for the game's first goal and his first goal of the season.
Aquinas would lead 1-0 after 45 minutes and would score early in the second half on a bit of a gift goal from Rochester. In the 49th minute,
Theo Maye dribbled up the right side and sent a cross in front of the net. His pass never made it to its intended target, but instead was knocked into the net by a Rochester player. Maye was credited with his sixth goal of the year.
Not even four minutes later, Maye assisted on AQ's third tally. He found
Steffano Riley with a nice feed up the left side of the field and Riley took it into the box and past the Warrior keeper with a shot to the bottom corner of the net for the 3-0 advantage. It was Riley's fifth goal of the season and Maye's seventh assist.
The fourth goal was scored by
Jasper Schinkel at the 67:05 mark off an assist from
Evan Van Nortwick, who was subbed into the game less than two minutes earlier. Van Nortwick found Schinkel on the right side and he dribbled into the box and sent a shot into the top corner of the net for his fourth goal in 2021.
Making his first appearance in goal this season,
Jared Ireland recorded five saves and kept Rochester off the board to earn the shutout win.
AQ doubled Rochester in shots 22-11 and held an 11-5 edge in shots on goal. Riley attempted four shots on goal, Schinkel had three attempts, and Maye and
Jake Ireland both put two shots on goal.
The Saints head to Ann Arbor on Saturday (Apr. 3) to face Concordia at 3:00 p.m.
