The Aquinas women's soccer team finished off an unbeaten regular season of conference play on Monday night (Mar. 29) at the AQ Athletic Field in Grand Rapids with a 3-0 shutout of visiting Siena Heights. #18 AQ scored twice in the first half and added a late goal to clinch its ninth WHAC victory in nine games this season.
Â
Already regular season conference champions after the Saturday win at Concordia, Aquinas completed the perfect 9-0 regular season with the three-goal victory. Overall, AQ is 11-1 on the season. The Saints outscored their nine WHAC opponents by an overall 38-4 goal margin and won all nine conference games by at least three goals each.
Â
It took less than 10 minutes for Aquinas to get on the scoreboard against Siena Heights (5-6 overall, 4-5 WHAC).
Hannah Crum found
Macy Hollingsworth on a cross from just outside the box on the left side. Hollingsworth took the pass and was wide open, easily tapping it in for the early 1-0 lead at the 9:29 mark.
Â
The same duo struck again the same way at the 26:17 mark of the half, as Crum sent a pass from the top of the box to Hollingsworth, who fired it into the bottom left of the net for the 2-0 advantage. The two goals were Hollingsworth's third and fourth of the year, while Crum's helpers were her eighth and ninth assists.
Â
It was still 2-0 in AQ's favor until the 75th minute, when Crum took a corner kick from the home side corner. Her corner traveled into the box, where
Breanna Probst sent a short cross back across the box. It was there that
Sydney Shenk took it and sent it into the goal for the final tally of the contest. The goal was Shenk's seventh and Probst's first assist.
Â
AQ closed out the win with a 20-6 margin in total shots and an 11-2 edge in shots on goal. The home Saints doubled up Siena Heights in corners, 4-2.Â
Â
Shenk and
Filippa Struxsjo each attempted three shots on goal, while Hollingsworth and
Ariana Garcia each had two shots on target.Â
Â
Braeleigh McCoy made a pair of saves in net for her fifth shutout of the season.Â
Â
Aquinas, which went 5-0 at home this season and allowed just two goals, will host the opening round of the WHAC Tournament on Saturday (Apr. 3) at the AQ Athletic Field. Gametime against an opponent to be determined is tentatively scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
