AQ Men Stay Unbeaten With 4-0 Win Over Cleary

Riley, Schinkel, Maye, and Van Nortwick tally goals in the victory

The Aquinas men's soccer team notched its third shutout in its first four games, topping Cleary by a 4-0 final on Friday afternoon (Mar. 5) in Brighton, Mich. AQ scored three times in the final 45 minutes and goalie Antonio Strassioto registered his third shutout, as the Saints outshot Cleary by a 17-7 margin.

With the victory, AQ remains unbeaten at 4-0 on the year and 3-0 in WHAC play. The Saints have given up just two goals in four games; both goals came in last week's 3-2 overtime win against Madonna. Cleary drops to 0-3-1 on the season and 0-2-1 in conference play.

Aquinas dominated possession and chances, with the 17-7 shot margin (11-1 on goal) and a 7-0 lead in corner kicks. Four different Saints scored in the win, with Steffano Riley kicking things off at the 17:05 mark on a header from Theo Maye. It was Riley's team-high fourth goal of the season.

The game went to halftime as a 1-0 Aquinas lead. AQ outshot the Cougars 8-3 in the opening 45 minutes.

Jasper Schinkel made it 2-0 nearly 20 minutes into the second half, as his goal at the 63:50 mark was assisted from Fin Pittock on a centering pass from the right side. Maye upped the lead to 3-0 with his goal at 79:22, scoring on a header from Jerman Padron. It is Maye's third tally of the year.

Seven minutes later, Evan Van Nortwick found the back of the net on a cross from Jake Sherman to make it 4-0 and close out the game's scoring.

With just the one shot on goal, Strassioto only needed to make one save for his third clean sheet of 2021. Maye, Riley, and Schinkel all attempted three shots, with Schinkel's three shots all coming on goal.

AQ has a week off until its next game. The Saints will host Indiana Tech in their first true home game next Saturday (Mar. 13). Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. against the Warriors.
