AQ Women Fall in Season Opener to Saint Ambrose

The Aquinas women's lacrosse team competed in their 2021 season opener on Saturday afternoon (Mar. 6), facing St. Ambrose in a big non-conference showdown. The Saints dropped the opener to the Fighting Bees by a score of 14-9, as (RV) Saint Ambrose improves to a 3-0 overall record.

Today's home opener for AQ was exactly one year from last year's home opener, Mar. 6, 2020, and was the Saints' last home contest of the 2020 season. Aquinas battled with the Fighting Bees today, as St. Ambrose took the slight advantage heading into halftime with a 6-4 lead.

The Fighting Bees got off to a hot start in the second half, going on a 6-1 scoring run. The Saints rallied back, going on a 4-1 scoring run of their own late in the game. St. Ambrose notched another goal as Aquinas wasn't able to overcome the Fighting Bees' lead. AQ drops to 0-1 on the year.

The Saints were led by freshman Cierra Davis, who tallied three goals and an assist. Freshman Alex Sullivan also came up with a pair of goals for AQ. Naomi Plant, Lauren Hansen, Brianna Trepins, and Kennadie Minerich each posted a goal in today's game. Alyssa Chartier dished out one assist.

St. Ambrose took the advantage over Aquinas in total shots (33-24) as Azariah Wells totaled 11 saves. The Fighting Bees also led in draw controls (15-10) and ground balls (34-29).

Aquinas is back on the field next Saturday (Mar. 13) as the Saints host Madonna in a non-conference matchup. The game against the Crusaders is set to begin at 12:00 PM at the AQ Athletic Field.
