The Aquinas women's soccer team jumped ahead quickly against visiting Indiana Tech on Saturday afternoon (Mar. 6) at the AQ Athletic Field, scoring five first-half goals en route to a 6-1 victory. It was the 2021 home opener for the Saints and AQ looked comfortable on its home field, notching four goals in the opening 30 minutes of the win.
With the win, Aquinas improves to 4-1 on the season and 2-0 in WHAC play. Indiana Tech drops to 2-8 overall and 2-4 in conference action.
AQ scored twice in the opening 12 minutes, as
Sydney Shenk scored unassisted in the ninth minute and
Hannah Crum made it 2-0 at the 11:01 mark off a nice feed from
Macy Hollingsworth. The lead grew to 3-0 on a
Filippa Struxsjo goal, assisted by
Brittney Carter on a solid strike from outside the box.
Crum and Hollingsworth connected again at the 28:47 mark for Crum's second goal of the day, making it 4-0.
Olympia Katsouridis scored her first goal in an AQ uniform, scoring off a pass from Maddie Gryzbek and putting it over the goalie's outstretched arms. The Saints led 5-0 at halftime, outshooting the Warriors by a 21-4 count.
AQ pushed its lead to 6-0 when
Laia Cunill tallied her third goal of the year. The goal came six minutes into the second half, as Hollingsworth collected her third assist of the night.
Indiana Tech prevented the shutout by scoring in the 60th minute, but Aquinas owned a 35-11 shot advantage – including a 19-6 advantage in shots on goal. The Saints took all six of the game's corners.
Crum took nine shots and now has a team-high seven goals on the year. Struxsjo and
Katelyn Kahael each took six shot attempts, while Katsouridis put all three of her attempts on goal.
Tairyn Webb made five saves in goal for the Saints to earn her second victory of the year.
AQ is back on its home field again next Wednesday (Mar. 10) for a 7:00 p.m. start against Lawrence Tech.
