The Aquinas baseball team hosted Madonna in a big WHAC doubleheader on Saturday (Apr. 10) at the WMSC Sports Complex. The Saints dropped two as Madonna got a quick jump in the first game and finished with a strong ninth inning in game two. Aquinas fell by 9-4 and 10-4 scores. The two losses move the Saints to a 16-14 overall record and 1-5 in the WHAC.
The Crusader got out to a hot start tallying eight runs in the first four innings to AQ's zero. Aquinas was only able to score in the eighth inning as Alec Lockwood doubled down the left field line to score three. A Dane Smitz single scored Lockwood, but the Saints weren't able to close the gap falling by a 9-4 score.
Lucas Weinert led the Saints hitting 2-3 with a run. Smitz finished hitting 2-4 with an RBI. Lockwood and Michael Maher posted the other two hits for the Saints. Ben Snider (2-2) was dealt the loss on the mound for AQ, though only two of his six runs allowed were earned runs.
In game two, Madonna started the first inning by tallying two runs. The Saints and Crusaders were scoreless until the fifth. Madonna posted three more in the top of the inning. AQ responded as Nick Brzezinski doubled to right center field scoring one. Smitz then grounded out but earned the RBI as Chris Surial Garcia scored, closing the gap to three runs.
AQ came back in the bottom of the sixth to score two more. A bunt single by Braden Nawrocki and a throwing error by Madonna's pitcher scored Anthony Arnold. A SAC bunt by Sean Wing scored another to put the Saints behind one (5-4 MU).
A powerful ninth inning for the Crusaders clinched the win for MU as they tallied five runs on four hits and two AQ errors. The Saints fell by a 10-4 score. The two wins move Madonna to 8-7 overall, 4-2 WHAC.
Grant Smitz (0-2) had the loss in the second game for AQ, pitching the first five innings and allowed three earned runs and posted three strikeouts. Reliever Richard Steffan pitched three innings for the Saints with just one of his five runs allowed being earned. Steffan also tallied six strikeouts.
The Saints were led offensively by Alex Strickland who hit 1-2 with a run. Maher hit 1-2 for AQ. Nawrocki hit 1-3 while both Brzezinski and Lockwood finished hitting 1-4.
Aquinas returns to play tomorrow (Apr. 11) as the Saints host Concordia in another WHAC doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1:00 PM against the Cardinals at the WMSC Sports Complex.
